Where we love to shoot

Glacier Point at sunrise: Anthia and Mauricio said their vows here with Half Dome behind them, and the sun came up the moment they started. The road is usually closed from November until late May or June.

Tunnel View: the first look at the whole valley, with El Capitan, Half Dome and Bridalveil Fall in one frame. Sam was practically moved to tears the first time she drove through the tunnel.

Yosemite Valley Chapel: a sweet little chapel with the falls in view. It's where we took Lauren and Max when weather closed Glacier Point Road early.

Along the Merced River: sweeping views of El Capitan and Bridalveil Fall from the riverbank, with easy walks from the car.

The waterfalls in winter: Emily and Kristian hiked a short, icy trail in fresh snow to say their vows at the base of the falls, then warmed up with brunch at The Ahwahnee.

Seasons and FAQs

Yosemite Elopement Planning

Winter (December to March): snow on the cliffs and a quiet, almost reverent valley. Glacier Point Road is closed and chains may be required, so we plan valley spots.

Spring (April to June): the waterfalls are at their fullest. Glacier Point Road usually reopens in late May or June.

Summer (July to August): everything is open, but it's the busiest season. Wildfire smoke is most likely in August and September.

Fall (October to November): golden color in the valley and fewer crowds. Glacier Point Road can close early when storms come in, so we always plan a backup.

Do we need a permit to elope in Yosemite? Yes. Every wedding or commitment ceremony in the park needs a special use permit. The $150 fee is nonrefundable, and you apply by mail between one year and 21 days before your date. The permit covers up to two hours, and permits aren't issued on holidays or holiday weekends.

What isn't allowed at the ceremony? Chairs, arches, decorations and drones aren't allowed, and neither is tossing rice, petals or birdseed. Handheld bouquets and boutonnieres are welcome.

When is the best time of day? Sunrise or late afternoon on a weekday. The light is softer and the popular spots are much quieter.

Where do we get a marriage license? From any California county. A California license is valid anywhere in the state for 90 days.

Do you charge travel fees for Yosemite? Yes. Yosemite elopements include a $350 travel fee.
